Dr. Coral Sanfeliu, from the IIBB, has published together with dr. José Luis Trejo, from the Cajal Institute, a new book on the effects of exercise on the brain.
Physical exercise produces undoubted benefits for the whole organism, for our health and, of course, for the brain. However, in recent years, numerous neuroscientific advances have gone relatively unnoticed that indicate which type of exercise is good for which aspects; that the intensity of the exercise is a crucial factor to obtain specific results; which brain areas are benefited by moderate or vigorous exercise, as well as the latest developments on its effect on depression, anxiety, cognition, aging and neurodegeneration. Although we are far from being able to develop a personalized exercise plan useful for each human being, which produces benefits for the different physiological systems of the body without increasing stress, there is no doubt that being sedentary is the 'enemy of a healthy brain.
