The main mission of the IIBB Sustainability Commission is to analyze the procedures, facilities, instruments, situations, etc. that lead to the consumption of energy or water resources and to propose measures to optimize and reduce these consumptions. It also aims to reduce the environmental impact of research-specific waste generation through its reduction and/or better separation.

To advise users of the Cell Culture Service on the correct handling of type 2 biohazard materials. Keep control of biological risk agents type 1 and 2 used in the Service.

To evaluate proposals for the acquisition of scientific equipment and propose purchasing priorities. Decide which repairs and maintenance contracts for equipment or facilities could be funded from the institute’s accounts.

To evaluate project applications that specifically require a report from the center's commission regarding ethical aspects and viability within the IIBB.
