This October dedicated to liver cancer, we want to disseminate and share some of our ongoing projects. Liver cancer is the third highest cancer-related death worldwide, and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), the most common type, comprises 75-90% of liver cancer cases. The liver is one of the largest organs in the body. It filters harmful substances from the blood, produces bile that helps in the digestion of fats, and stores sugar that the body uses for energy. In addition, the liver is a fascinating organ, as it is the only one with the ability to regenerate in response to damage or loss of tissue. Despite this, the lack of effective therapies makes liver transplantation the only option for patients in advanced stages of liver disease. Diseases such as those produced by alcohol consumption, by diets enriched in fat, or by viruses, are risk factors in the development of HCC. In recent years, the increase in obesity and type 2 diabetes in the population has triggered the cases of liver cancer. Our research group is working to elucidate new molecular and cellular mechanisms that prevent the progression of fatty liver disease toward HCC. Our goal is to contribute to the design of personalized therapies.
