In the 2023 edition, the TV3 La Marató Foundation raised 7.1 million euros to finance 26 research projects in sexual and reproductive health. Dr. Daniel Closa, Dr. Montserrat Carrascal and Dr. Carme Casal have secured one of the projects, in coordination with Dr. Àngles Martínez, from the Hospital Clínic de Barcelona, to study the role of extracellular vesicles in endometriosis. In addition to pelvic pain, many women with endometriosis suffer from other chronic pain comorbidities such as central sensitization syndrome, fibromyalgia and migraines. The main objective of the project, entitled "Endometriosis beyond pelvic pain: clinical and molecular study of pain comorbidities in a large cohort of patients with long-term follow-up" is to evaluate the prevalence, identify risk factors for these comorbidities and response to treatments, as well as define the possible involvement of circulating extracellular vesicles in the modulation of endogenous pathways related to systemic inflammation and pain regulation.
