The article “Neuroinflammation in Age-Related Neurodegenerative Diseases: Role of Mitochondrial Oxidative Stress” from the group “Signaling in Cellular Damage and Cancer” led by Dr. Anna Colell has been chosen as the cover story for December in the journal Antioxidants.

This review highlights the role of mitochondrial oxidative stress in the development of age-related neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) generated by mitochondria through inflammatory signaling pathways, such as inflammasomes and cGAS-STING, can trigger immunogenic cell death, such as pyroptosis, necroptosis and metal ion-induced cell death. Understanding these mechanisms may help identify new therapeutic targets to modulate the inflammatory response and, potentially, slow down the progression of the disease.

This work, co-directed by Vicente Roca-Agujetas (Instituto de Biomedicina de Sevilla, IBiS), has Xenia Abadin as first author and different groups from the Centro de Investigación Biomédica en Red de Enfermedades Neurodegenerativas (CIBERNED) and Enfermedades Hepáticas y Digestivas (CIBEREHD), have participated in its realization.

In addition to the support of CIBERNED and CIBEREHD, this work has received funding from MCIN (PID2022-143279OB-100, PID2021-123564OB-100, PDC2023-145806-100, PID2020-115091RB-I00, and RED2022-134786-T); from  Instituto de Salud Carlos III (ISCIII) (PMP22/00100 and PI22/00475); from AGAUR (2021-SGR00490) and Junta de Andalucia (US-1262734 and P20-00843).
