The growth hormone secretagogue receptor (GHSR) is a G protein coupled receptor mainly expressed in the brain. GHSR acts as the receptor for ghrelin and plays key roles regulating growth hormone secretion, food intake, body weight and glucose homeostasis. Recently, GHSR was also shown to bind to the liver-expressed antimicrobial peptide 2, which acts as an antagonist/inverse agonist of GHSR. Also, GHSR displays ligand independent functions, such as constitutive activity or modulation of other receptors. This seminar will provide a summary of the current understanding of the functional role of GHSR, specially addressing its role as an orexigenic signal.
