The research that Dr. Goicoechea carries out in the "Mitochondrial Regulation of Cell Death" laboratory focuses on the study of the impact of mitochondrial cholesterol on neurodegeneration, with special focus on Niemann Pick type C disease (NPC), with the aim of to identify new therapies. NPC disease is a neurodegenerative lysosomal storage disease caused by defective function of the NPC1/NPC2 proteins, leading to excessive accumulation of cholesterol in the lysosomes of affected organs, primarily the liver and brain. The work done by Dr. Goicoechea has led to promising data indicating that S-adenosylmethionine (SAMe) may be a promising therapy for this disease.
